Madeira

On the water

Sea kayaking

Paddling the calm south coast, the Garajau reserve and Seixal’s black sand

What it is like here

Madeira has no rivers or lakes to paddle, so kayaking happens at sea, in calm water near the coast. The usual starts are Funchal marina, the Garajau reserve, where only boats without engines are allowed, and Seixal on the north coast, below waterfalls that fall into the sea. On Porto Santo, kayaks can be hired to paddle to Zimbralinho or Ilhéu da Cal.

Companies provide the boats and a short lesson, and guides take beginners and families out all year.

Before you go

  • Only water sports without an engine are allowed in the Garajau reserve, where nothing may be taken from the sea. Source
