Madeira

On the water

Snorkelling

A mask, a snorkel and fins in the clear water of two nature reserves

What it is like here

All it takes is a mask, a snorkel and fins, and the sea never drops below about 17 °C, so it works all year and suits families. Fish can be seen off almost any beach, but the clearest water and the most life are in the two reserves: Garajau, east of Funchal, and Ponta de São Lourenço, past Caniçal at the island’s eastern tip. Porto Santo is popular too, and dive centres run guided trips.

Before you go

  • In the Garajau reserve nothing may be taken or harmed, and fishing, spearfishing and nets are banned; swimming and non-motorised activities are allowed. Source

Where

  1. Caniçal (Ponta de São Lourenço) — In the Ponta de São Lourenço reserve: caves, clear water and guided trips for beginners
  2. Garajau beach — A pebble beach in the Garajau reserve, reached by road or by cable car; very clear water

Who runs it

Members of the tourism board’s association, as Visit Madeira lists them. A list, not a recommendation.
