The place

A water channel cut through laurel forest down to a green amphitheatre where two dozen springs come out of the rock at once. It is the most popular walk on Madeira, which is both the recommendation and the warning.

When to come

First slot of the day. By late morning the narrow sections queue and the pool at the end is crowded.

Worth knowing

  • Rabaçal car park is tiny; a shuttle runs down the access road
  • Access road is steep and single-track — small car strongly preferred
  • Often combined with Levada do Risco, a short detour to a waterfall
  • Wet, slippery rock; proper shoes, not sandals
  • SIMplifica time-slot booking required, about 4.50 EUR
  • Starts from Rabaçal car park off the ER105
  • 11km round trip from the road, or shorter with the shuttle
  • Shuttle van runs 11:00-18:00 for the return leg, cash only
