Levada do Castelejo
A long, level levada through the valleys west of Porto da Cruz

The place
The Levada do Castelejo runs west from Referta, above Porto da Cruz, into the valleys below the central mountains, and ends at the bed of the Ribeiro Frio stream. It is a long channel, about 11.8 km one way, that holds a level line at 265 to 290 m for the whole distance, so the walking is easy on the legs: about three hours each way.
Long stretches of the path run along steep slopes, a few streams have to be forded and there is one short tunnel. It is not an official PR trail and gets no official upkeep, and rockfall has been reported along it, so it suits experienced walkers who check conditions first. The streambed at the far end, with a picnic spot, is the natural place to turn back. Near the start, the Quinta da Capela and the chapel lane mark the edge of Porto da Cruz.
