Casa das Mudas

A black-basalt art museum cut into the clifftop, built to look like the mountain itself.

The place

Architect Paulo David carved this contemporary art centre out of the hillside above Calheta in black basalt, so the building reads as topography rather than object. It won the Alvar Aalto medal and a Mies van der Rohe nomination, and its terraces frame an unbroken Atlantic horizon.

When to come

Late afternoon, when low sun rakes the basalt walls and the terrace faces the sunset.

Worth knowing

  • Free entry to most exhibition spaces
  • Cafe and restaurant on site
  • 10-minute drive up from Calheta centre
  • Closed Mondays (check current hours)
