The place

The Levada Nova do Arco da Calheta is a one-way walk from the same hydroelectric station as the longer Levada Nova da Calheta, ending at Lombo de São João. It covers about 16 km in five to six hours at a medium grade, and the route is flat. It passes above Arco da Calheta, with views over the village's housing, restored farmland and the Atlantic beyond.

Most of the exposed sections are fenced, but some stretches are unprotected, so the walk suits people who are comfortable with heights. The levada crosses local roads many times, and the stretches through native and introduced forest give some shade. Carry enough water and food for the whole outing.

Highlights

  1. The start at the Central Hidroelétrica da Calheta, the same power station where the longer levada begins.
  2. Views over Arco da Calheta's housing areas and the Atlantic beyond.
  3. Restored farmland and a mix of native and introduced forest along the channel.
  4. The finish at Lombo de São João, reached on the Caminho Fonte do Coxo.

When to come

Choose a dry day and allow five to six hours, so that you finish in daylight. Wet ground makes the unprotected stretches harder.

Getting there

Drive from Funchal on the VR1 to Ribeira Brava, take the VE3 towards Ponta do Sol and Calheta, and at the Calheta village roundabout take the first exit onto the E.R. 222 towards the hydroelectric station, which is on your left. The walk is one way, so arrange transport from Lombo de São João.

  • Supplies: carry water and food for the whole outing.
