The place

From the road-accessible Achada do Teixeira car park, this is 2.8km each way up a paved, stepped path past the Homem em Pé rock to the summit of Pico Ruivo — no tunnel, no via ferrata, just steady climbing at altitude. It's the route families and less technical hikers use to reach the same summit PR1 hikers earn the hard way.

When to come

Early morning, before cloud typically builds over the high ridge later in the day.

Worth knowing

  • Starts at Achada do Teixeira, reachable by paved road — no pre-dawn approach hike needed
  • SIMplifica booking and the €4.50 fee apply despite the short distance
  • Cobbled steps get slippery when wet or frosted
  • Round trip is about 1.5 hours, but the 1600-1862m altitude makes it feel harder than the distance suggests
