The place

Before the coast road existed, Vereda do Larano was the walking link between Madeira's north coast and Machico, cut into cliffs above the Atlantic. It's now a hiking trail in its own right, mostly forested with intermittent sea views, that most people walk as far as the Boca do Risco viewpoint before turning back or continuing on toward Machico.

When to come

Morning start for the full walk toward Machico; overcast days keep exposed sections cooler.

Worth knowing

  • Trailhead at the end of Caminho do Cabo de Larano, above Porto da Cruz
  • To Boca do Risco and back: about 10-11 km, 2.5-4 hours
  • Narrow cliffside sections with no guardrail - not for vertigo or small children
