The place

Engenhos do Norte has been distilling sugarcane rum since 1927 on 19th-century machinery, and it's one of the last distilleries in Europe still powered by steam. Between March and May you can watch the actual cane-to-rum process; the rest of the year the machinery and the Casa do Rum tasting room are still open for a free look and a sample.

When to come

March-May to see cane being processed; open the rest of the year for the tour and tasting.
