The place

Formed by volcanic activity roughly 5.8 million years ago, Penha d'Águia is the great green monolith that dominates the skyline above Porto da Cruz and Faial. Most visitors just admire it from the coast road, but a steep dirt trail starting near Katrepa's Bar in Porto da Cruz climbs to the summit for a 360-degree view over both villages and the Atlantic.

When to come

Early morning for cooler climbing and clearer light; avoid the dirt track right after rain.

Worth knowing

  • Trailhead near Katrepa's Bar, Porto da Cruz
  • Round trip about 3 hours, 686 m elevation gain
  • Steep, unmaintained track - sturdy shoes needed
  • Can be admired from the road without hiking
