The place

Madeira's second-highest summit sits at the technical heart of the Areeiro-to-Ruivo traverse, where the path narrows to iron rungs bolted into a rock tower with drops on both sides. There's no separate way in — you only stand here as part of the PR1 crossing.

When to come

Mid-morning, once your booked SIMplifica slot has let you onto the one-way trail from Areeiro.

Worth knowing

  • Only reachable via the PR1 trail — no standalone access
  • A narrow tunnel section on the approach needs a headlamp
  • Exposed via-ferrata-style sections have railings but are no place for vertigo
  • Trail runs one-way, Areeiro to Ruivo, since the 2026 reopening
