The place

Opened in 1945 as an English-style tea house, this Faial institution has grown into a full restaurant without dropping the tea service, and it now pours poncha alongside traditional Madeiran plates with a view toward the Eagle Rock, Penha de Águia. It's one of the few places on the island's north side where the afternoon-tea era and the poncha-tavern era genuinely overlap.

When to come

Mid-afternoon, for tea or poncha with the mountain view before continuing along the north coast

Worth knowing

  • Try poncha alongside the tea service — both are on the menu
  • Lombo de Baixo, Faial, Santana
  • Call ahead on quieter weekdays: +351 291 572 223
  • Pair with a stop at the Penha de Águia viewpoint nearby
