The place

Cabo Girão's cliff face drops 580m straight into the Atlantic, and since late 2012 a horseshoe-shaped glass skywalk has let visitors stand over the edge and look straight down at the tiny fajã vineyards clinging to the base of the cliff. It's a five-minute stop rather than a hike, but it's genuinely vertiginous even for people who don't normally mind heights.

When to come

Early morning for the clearest light and thinnest crowds; avoid the midday tour-bus rush

Worth knowing

  • €5 per person as of Jan 2026 (raised from €3 in 2025); Madeira residents and under-12s free
  • Free parking on site, a few minutes from Câmara de Lobos
  • Small cafe and gift shop at the entrance
  • Glass floor gets scuffed from foot traffic — don't expect a pristine mirror
