The place

From the gardens at Queimadas the levada contours into the north-facing valleys, through tunnels dripping onto your head, and ends at a waterfall dropping into a green stone bowl. The most atmospheric walk on the island if you like being slightly underground.

When to come

Morning. The north side clouds over in the afternoon and the tunnels get properly dark.

Worth knowing

  • Torch is not optional — four unlit tunnels, some long
  • Expect to get wet in the tunnels regardless of weather
  • Long drops on the valley side, protected in places but not all
  • Starts at Queimadas; parking is limited
  • SIMplifica booking required, €4.50 (€3 via licensed operator), plus paid parking at Queimadas
  • Headlamp essential for four tunnels, some with uneven ceilings
  • 17.4 km round trip for both cauldrons — plan 6-7 hours
  • Check madeirahiking.org / IFCN trail status before you go; the Inferno leg closes often
