The place

Queimadas is less a park than a set piece: a cluster of Santana-style thatched shelters around a pond at the edge of the Laurissilva forest. It's mainly known as the trailhead for PR9 to Caldeirão Verde, a long levada walk past hand-cut tunnels to a waterfall-fed pool, but the park itself is worth the stop even without hiking further.

When to come

Morning start if continuing to Caldeirão Verde; often misty, so bring a layer regardless.

Worth knowing

  • Trailhead for PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
  • Casa de Abrigo das Queimadas built in traditional Santana style
  • Narrow access road from Santana - drive carefully
