The place

Levada do Caldeirão Verde – Um Caminho para Todos is the official PR9.1, a one-way route of 1.9 km from the Queimadas forest park to the Pico das Pedras forest park, in the municipality of Santana. IFCN gives it about 45 minutes, and it is nearly level, between 870 m and 890 m. It is part of Um Caminho para Todos, a path for everyone: the route is laid out so that people with motor or visual disabilities can be in close touch with nature, and Visit Madeira says it can be done in an electric wheelchair on dry days.

The walkway follows the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, an 18th-century channel built to carry water from the Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde to the farmland of Faial. The woods are a transition between laurissilva, the laurel forest UNESCO listed in 1999, and exotic trees planted by people: Madeira elder grows in dense groups, mosses and ferns cover banks and trunks, and the endemic Trocaz pigeon is easy to see. At Queimadas, where PR9 also starts, the Casa das Tradições Madeirenses holds a collection on the daily life and customs of past generations.

  4. The Casa das Tradições Madeirenses at Queimadas, with its collection on the daily life of past generations.

When to come

A dry day: Visit Madeira says the route can then be done in an electric wheelchair. The weather changes often, so bring a warm layer and enough water.

Getting there

Start at the Queimadas forest park, where the panel map shows parking, toilets, a café, a mountain shelter and a leisure area; Visit Madeira gives parking at €2.00 an hour. The route ends at the Pico das Pedras forest park, which also has parking and toilets, so return the same way or arrange a pick-up there; the panel lists Táxis Santana, +351 291 572 540.
