The place

Caniço de Baixo is the sea-level resort strip below the older hilltop village of Caniço, developed around a rocky, pebbly shoreline rather than sand — lidos, saltwater pools and easy access to the Garajau marine reserve make it more of a diving-and-swimming base than a classic beach destination. It's quieter and more residential than Funchal's hotel zone, and popular with repeat visitors rather than first-timers.

When to come

Shoulder season (May, September) for warm water without peak-summer crowds

Worth knowing

  • Between Funchal and the airport, about 20 minutes from each by car
  • Rocky/pebble shoreline — water shoes help
  • Main shore-diving hub for the Garajau reserve
  • Hilltop Caniço village (18th-century church, main square) is a short walk up
