The place

What began as a stone hut sheltering shepherds and hunters above Camacha is now a 150-seat house built entirely around game: wild boar escalopes, black pork plumas, kid stew, roast rabbit. It's where Madeirans go when they want meat that isn't espetada, in a wood-and-stone room that still feels like the shelter it started as.

When to come

Sunday lunch, when local families book it out for long meals

Worth knowing

  • Book ahead, especially Sundays — it fills with local family groups
  • Open daily 11:00-23:00
  • Order the wild boar or kid stew rather than the standard espetada
  • Estrada das Carreiras 209, Camacha
