The place

Flower sellers in traditional dress and fruit stalls stacked with custard apples get the camera attention, but the ground-floor fish hall, where scabbardfish and tuna are auctioned off, is the part that's genuinely unglamorous and real. It has run this way since 1940 and is still where a lot of Funchal restaurants buy their produce. Go early and it's a working market first, photo op second.

When to come

Friday or Saturday morning, when the farmers' stalls are fullest

Worth knowing

  • Closed Sundays; quietest on weekday afternoons
  • The downstairs fish hall is worth a look even if you're not buying
  • Light haggling over fruit prices is normal, keep it good-natured
  • Rua Brigadeiro Oudinot / Largo dos Lavradores, central Funchal
