The place

Funchal's Botanical Garden occupies a former quinta on the slopes above the city, terraced between roughly 150 and 300m, with a collection of over 2,000 species — succulents, orchids, a topiary garden viewed from above — plus a small natural history museum and a parrot park that's popular with kids. The view over Funchal's rooftops and bay from the upper terraces is worth the visit on its own on a clear day.
