The place

Barreirinha is the old town's bathing complex, tucked below Rua de Santa Maria near the Igreja do Socorro, with sunbeds, sea access cut into volcanic rock, and lifeguard cover for a Blue Flag-rated stretch of water. It's less dramatic than Doca do Cavacas but far more convenient if you're already spending the day wandering the painted doors above it.

When to come

Summer (its only open season), late morning before the rocks fill up

Worth knowing

  • Open daily 9:00-20:00, June 1 to September 30 only
  • Rua de Santa Maria 281, Zona Velha
  • Paid entry via the municipal Frente Mar Funchal tariff
  • 5-minute walk from Forte de São Tiago
