The place

Descended from a 19th-century way of getting produce and people down from Monte quickly, the Carros de Cesto is now a tourist ride: two men in white linen and straw boaters push and steer a wicker basket-sled down 2km of steep cobbled road toward Livramento in about 10 minutes. It's kitsch and a little bruising on the cobbles, but it's one of the few 'rides' on the island that's actually a mode of transport more than 150 years old.
