The place

Levada dos Tornos is the levada walk most reachable without a car: ride the Monte cable car up from Funchal's old town, then follow the channel through eucalyptus and laurel woods past the Monte Palace gardens. The bay of Funchal stays in view for much of the route on clear days, and it finishes near Camacha or the Palheiro estate.

When to come

Late afternoon for the light over Funchal bay; avoid weekend mornings when the Monte cable car queue is long.

Worth knowing

  • Not an official PR trail — no SIMplifica fee
  • Coordinates mark central Monte; start near the cable car upper station or Nossa Senhora do Monte church
  • Mostly flat and easy, suitable for families
  • Buses connect Camacha/Palheiro back to Funchal if walked one-way
