The place

Where the coastal promenade meets the eastern end of Praia Formosa, Doca do Cavacas is a small municipal bathing complex built around a natural volcanic pool — the only one of its kind on Madeira's south coast — with a lifeguard, sunbeds and a restaurant right on the rocks. A short tunnel, Túnel das Poças do Gomes, connects it to the promenade with sea views along the way.

When to come

Calm-sea days; it closes when swells or high tide make the pool unsafe
