The place

Above the bay that gave Madeira both its poncha and its espetada, Vila do Peixe does one thing: fish grilled over charcoal, chosen by hand and priced by the kilo. Peixe-espada preto, the deep-water black scabbardfish that defines Câmara de Lobos cooking, is the reason to come. The terrace looks straight down over the harbour where the boats that caught it are moored.

When to come

Early dinner for a sunset table over the bay; book ahead in summer

Worth knowing

  • Fish is sold by weight — ask the price before you pick your piece
  • Reservations recommended for terrace/view tables
  • Rua Padre Eduardo Clemente Nunes Pereira, Câmara de Lobos
  • Not a budget stop — fresh fish by weight adds up quickly
