The place

At 1,400 metres, where the road to Pico do Arieiro crosses the Poiso pass, this old refuge has warmed hikers and drivers for generations with poncha shaken at the bar and açorda made the way grandparents made it. Outside it still looks like the mountain shelter it started as; inside, a wood fire and pepper steak do the rest. It functions as much as a waypoint as a destination.

When to come

Midday on a Pico do Arieiro run, to warm up with soup or açorda before or after the peak

Worth knowing

  • Open daily 09:00-22:30, shorter hours Monday evenings
  • Stop at the bar for poncha even without a full meal
  • Bring a layer — it is genuinely cold at 1,400 m even in summer
  • On the ER202/ER203 junction toward Pico do Arieiro, near Camacha
