The place

Santo António da Serra, known locally as Santo da Serra, is Madeira's highland retreat, a plateau parish at 700 m where the well-off built country manors. One, the Quinta do Santo da Serra, is now a public park with peacocks, fallow deer and Garrano ponies among camellias and azaleas, and its golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., regularly hosts the Madeira Islands Open.

When to come

Spring for the camellias and azaleas in the Quinta gardens; noticeably cooler than the coast year-round.

Worth knowing

  • Quinta do Santo da Serra park entry around 3 euros, free 12 and under
  • Golf club open to visitors, tee times bookable
  • Often cloudier and cooler than the coast below
