The place
Pico do Facho was once a bonfire lookout warning Machico of approaching ships; the name literally means torch peak. Today it's a short drive or walk up from town to a 280 m overlook taking in the whole Machico valley, the eastern peninsula, and, on a clear day, the Desertas Islands offshore.
When to come
Late afternoon for light over the bay; easy access year-round.
Worth knowing
- Short drive up from Machico, near the approach to the Caniçal tunnel
- Also reachable on foot via a signed path
- Combine with a walk down toward Machico beach or the fort
