The place

Chão da Ribeira is a farmed valley tucked into the hills above Seixal, reached by a narrow access road most visitors never bother with. It has a small picnic area with a barbecue and a working farm landscape wrapped in laurissilva forest, plus trailheads for canyoning and the long PR13 route up toward Fanal. Every January it hosts the Panelo feast, a traditional stew cooked and eaten right at the picnic ground.

When to come

Morning if heading onward toward Fanal on foot; January specifically for the Panelo feast if the timing lines up.

Worth knowing

  • Access road is narrow with limited signage — easy to miss the turn from Seixal
  • No real facilities beyond the picnic area — bring food and water
  • Mobile signal is patchy to absent in the valley
  • Doubles as a trailhead for guided canyoning trips and the PR13 Fanal route
