The place
One of Madeira's oldest and most complete levada walks, threading dense laurissilva above the Faial valley with views to the Penha de Águia rock formation. It's normally the natural continuation for hikers who've done the short Balcões loop and want a full day in the forest instead.
When to come
Spring for wildflowers and fullest flow; historically fewer crowds than Balcões or 25 Fontes even when fully open.
Worth knowing
- Closed since a January 2026 landslide — check IFCN / madeirahiking.org trail-status before planning around it
- When open: SIMplifica booking required, €4.50 (€3 via licensed operator)
- 11 km one-way, no loop — arrange transport back from Portela
- Buses serve both Ribeiro Frio and Portela from Funchal
