The place

This loop links two levadas above Ponta do Sol, threading past derelict watermills and through a hand-cut rock tunnel (bring a light) before reaching Levada Nova's waterfall. It's a quieter alternative to Rabaçal, close enough to the coast to combine with lunch in town.

When to come

Just after winter/spring for the fullest waterfall; skip after heavy rain when the path floods.

Worth knowing

  • Starts at the church car park in Lombada, Ponta do Sol
  • About 9km round trip, 3.5-4 hours
  • Bring a torch for the tunnel section
  • Some sections lack railings, take care near drops
