The place

Statistically the sunniest spot on Madeira, tucked under cliffs on the south-west coast. Since the Digital Nomad Village opened it has a disproportionate number of laptops per café, and a better wifi-to-view ratio than anywhere else on the island.

When to come

Late afternoon — the cliffs mean the sun leaves early, so the golden hour is genuinely early.

Worth knowing

  • Pebble beach with a sea-facing bar built into the cliff
  • Tunnel access to a small beach and a lift down
  • Coworking and a real remote-work community, out of season too
  • John Dos Passos Cultural Centre hosts free exhibitions
  • Small pebble-and-concrete bathing area at the harbor
  • Sol Poente restaurant sits right on the pier
  • About 25 minutes west of Funchal by the VE1/VR1
