The place

Sol Poente means 'setting sun,' and the name is literal: the dining terrace hangs over the harbor wall at the mouth of Ponta do Sol, facing due west. The kitchen leans on the day's catch, with scabbard fish and banana or grilled tuna as the standing order.

When to come

An hour before sunset, booked ahead in summer.

Worth knowing

  • Reservations recommended for outdoor tables at sunset
  • Fresh fish and seafood, scabbard with banana is the local dish
  • Right at Cais da Ponta do Sol, walkable from the centre
