The place

A pocket of primary laurel forest — the UNESCO-listed laurisilva that once covered southern Europe and now mostly survives here. Also the practical hub for Balcões and the long descent to Portela.

When to come

Morning. It sits on the cloud line, so afternoons are often wet.

Worth knowing

  • Parking is roadside along a bend — genuinely tight
  • Trout farm and a couple of restaurants
  • Damp and cool; the forest holds moisture all year
