The place

Vereda do Calhau da Lapa is a steep footpath of about 1 km from Campanário down to Calhau da Lapa, a small pebble beach on Madeira's west coast in Ribeira Brava municipality. The walk takes about 30 minutes and drops close to sea level, so the climb back up is the main effort. The path is short, but steep enough to demand proper footwear.

The beach is what makes the trip worthwhile. It sits at the foot of steep cliffs, the water is clear, and the bathing area is small and quiet. Mild temperatures through the year mean the season matters less than the weather on the day, and boats can also reach the beach if you would rather not walk back up the cliff.

Highlights

  1. The path drops from Campanário to a pebble beach at about sea level in around 30 minutes.
  2. The beach is small and quiet, with clear water and a shore of pebbles.
  3. Boats can also reach the beach, which gives you a second way in.
  4. Steep cliffs line the route, and rockfall is a known risk along them.

When to come

Temperatures stay mild all year, so pick a settled day and start in the morning, which leaves plenty of daylight for the climb back up the cliff path.

Getting there

Start in Campanário, Ribeira Brava, and follow the footpath of about 1 km down the cliff to the beach.

Worth knowing

  • Check Visit Madeira before you set out, because the beach is temporarily closed.
  • Allow about 30 minutes for the route, plus time for the steep climb back up.
  • Wear comfortable footwear with good grip for the steep descent and the climb back.
  • Carry water for the return, since the climb back up is the hardest part of the walk.
  • Swim with care, as the beach is open to the sea and lifeguard cover should not be relied on.
  • Keep clear of the cliff faces, since rockfall and landslides are a known danger in this area.
