The place

These are volcanic lava pools, not sand — three basins carved from black rock at the island's northwest tip, with the open Atlantic surging in and out through the gaps. At roughly 3,800 m² of swimming area and 2 m deep, it's the largest natural pool complex on Madeira, with lifeguards, changing rooms, and a bar built into the rock. The pools shut when the swell turns dangerous, so a calm-to-moderate sea is the point, not flat water.

When to come

Calm-to-moderate swell for open water without danger; arrive before 11am to beat tour-bus groups; closes to bathers in big winter storms.

  • Lifeguards can close swimming in heavy swell with no warning
  • Gets tour-bus-crowded midday; changing rooms and bar on site
