The place

The name Ribeira da Janela — 'river of the window' — comes from the hole worn clean through the top of one of these three islets, visible from the clifftop platform. It's a mandatory-stop viewpoint on the coast road, small but purpose-built with railings and parking. The best light rakes low across the rock in late afternoon.

When to come

Late afternoon, when low sun rakes across the islets and picks out the hole in the rock; clear days only, since sea haze flattens the view.

Worth knowing

  • Roadside pull-off parking, can fill with tour vans midday
  • Railed platform but still a real cliff edge — mind kids
  • Look carefully for the 'window' islet; it isn't the largest of the three rocks
  • Combine with the nearby village and the Ribeira da Janela levada trailhead
