The place
Cachalote has stood over the volcanic rock at Porto Moniz since 1969, close enough to the natural pools that diners get sea spray with their view. Its Arroz de Lapas — limpet rice — has held a Guinness World Record since 2011 for the largest dish of its kind ever served. It's touristy by virtue of location, but the fish is genuinely fresh and the setting is the actual draw.
When to come
Outside the 12:30-14:00 peak — tour groups visiting the pools fill it fast at classic lunch hours.
