The place

Porto Moniz sits at the island's northwest corner, where the coast road finally runs out of cliff and drops to sea level. The village itself is compact — pools, aquarium, and a couple of restaurants built right into the black rock — but it's the natural gateway to Ribeira da Janela, Achadas da Cruz, and the Paul da Serra plateau above. Most visitors come for a few hours around the pools rather than staying over.

When to come

Late morning after the pools open but before peak tour-bus arrival; late afternoon light suits photos of the rock pools.

Worth knowing

  • Pools, aquarium, and Restaurante Cachalote all sit within a 5-minute walk of each other
  • Parking fills up around midday in high season
  • About an hour from Funchal via the tunnels, or longer on the scenic old coast road
  • Old ER101 sections nearby can close after storms
