The place

This small parish (population 228 at the 2011 census) sits where the Ribeira da Janela river reaches the sea after running down from Paul da Serra, nearly 1,400 m above. It gave its name — and the northwest coast's best-known viewpoint — to the three islets just offshore, one of which has the eponymous 'window' hole. The village itself is a quiet stop, best combined with the viewpoint and the long levada that shares its name.

When to come

Combine with the Ilhéus viewpoint at late-afternoon light; start the levada trailhead nearby in the morning if walking any real distance.

Worth knowing

  • Very small — a short stop rather than a half-day destination on its own
  • The 'window' islet is best seen from the dedicated viewpoint, not from the village itself
  • Levada da Ribeira da Janela trailhead (Lagoa dos Lamaceiros) is a short drive south
  • Limited services — treat Porto Moniz or São Vicente as your base
