The place

This single-cabin cableway drops roughly 434-450 m over about 600 m of cable, built so Achadas da Cruz farmers could reach the fertile fajã below without a punishing cliff path — locally billed as the steepest cable car in Europe. Tourists now ride alongside the produce. The ride is short, but the view straight down the cliff face to the Atlantic is the whole point.

When to come

Weekday mornings for the shortest queue; confirm the schedule ahead since it shifts summer/winter and pauses for wind or maintenance.

Worth knowing

  • Cash only, on-site: €3 one-way, €5 round trip (2025 pricing), discounts for seniors/students/residents
  • Summer: Mon-Fri roughly 08:00-09:00 and 13:00-20:00; weekends from 07:30; winter afternoons end nearer 18:00
  • Single vai-vem cabin — waits build up behind a tour group
  • Maintenance closures aren't always announced ahead — check before driving out
