The place

Locals call them Poças das Lesmas, and they're wilder than the engineered pools at Porto Moniz — seawater pools shaped naturally between basalt outcrops, with a lava arch framing the main basin. Lifeguard supervision only started in 2024, which tells you how recently this stayed a locals-only spot. Low tide opens up more rock to sit on; high swell can shut it entirely.

When to come

Low tide for the widest pools and calmest water; skip right after storms when the Atlantic is still up.

Worth knowing

  • Lifeguard cover only since 2024 — check conditions before swimming in swell
  • Volcanic rock is sharp and slick; water shoes help
  • Toilets, showers, and a bar nearby but no major facilities
  • Distinct from Praia do Porto do Seixal (black-sand beach), a short walk away
