PR1.3 - Vereda da Encumeada
An 11km ridge walk toward Encumeada — currently a there-and-back, not a through-hike.

The place
PR1.3 drops west off Pico Ruivo through Laurissilva forest and volcanic scarp, past the cave Furna da Lapa da Cadela, on a route designed to link the summit all the way to Boca da Encumeada. As of the 2026 season the section beyond Boca das Torrinhas toward Encumeada is closed, so most hikers use it as an extension from Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo rather than a full crossing.
When to come
Clear mornings — this is a long, exposed ridge and afternoon cloud makes the drop-offs harder to read.
Worth knowing
- Currently passable only from Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo toward Boca das Torrinhas — the continuation to Encumeada is closed; check SIMplifica/IFCN before planning a through-hike
- €4.50 fee via SIMplifica, children 12 and under free
- Full route would take about 6 hours — budget less if turning back at the closure
- Combine with PR1.2 or PR1 rather than relying on it alone to reach Encumeada
