The place

This walk starts at Ribeira Seca in Machico, opens with a climb and reaches the Boca do Risco viewpoint. From there, mountains rise on one side and the sea lies on the other, so the reward is the view rather than a summit.

The full course from Ribeira Seca to Machico passes the viewpoint and climbs about 1,060 m in total, so it is rated difficult and suits only experienced walkers. From the viewpoint, the cliff path can also be walked on towards Machico via Larano, about 8 km, or towards Porto da Cruz, about 6 km further. The coast here is exposed and has almost no shade, so it rewards an early start and a steady pace. The route can be walked in any season, though calm, dry days make the exposed stretches easier.
