The place

Open since 1993 on a vineyard and vegetable estate above Santana's sea cliffs, Quinta do Furão pairs Madeiran staples — limpets, espetada, scabbardfish — with its own estate wine and produce. The dining room and terrace look straight down the island's most rugged stretch of north coast. Book the balcony; the view does as much work as the kitchen.

When to come

Sunset dinner on the terrace, booked a day ahead in summer

Worth knowing

  • Book ahead for a balcony or terrace table
  • The estate bottles its own wine, sold on site
  • Part of the Quinta do Furão hotel, Estrada da Quinta do Furão, Santana
  • A separate stone-walled pub section suits a quicker, cheaper bite
