The place

Curral das Freiras, the crater village nuns once fled to, grows chestnuts on every slope around it, and Sabores do Curral is one of the only restaurants in Portugal that runs the ingredient through an entire menu — soup, stews, cakes, and the local licor de castanha to finish. It's a logical lunch stop after the descent into the valley, and a rare case of a restaurant menu doubling as a lesson in local agriculture.

When to come

Lunch after the miradouro viewpoint stop, before the drive back out of the valley

Worth knowing

  • Try the chestnut soup and the licor de castanha (chestnut liqueur) together
  • Caminho da Igreja 1, Curral das Freiras
  • Small village restaurant — arrive before the tour-bus lunch rush
  • Also sells bottled liqueurs and honey cake to take away
